PIAZZA CAVOUR

Piazza Cavour is a favourite with locals for a stroll, and children love to play by the fountains.  It is a large open green square filled with architecture completed in 1910 with the imposing palace of Justice called "palazzaccio" by the Romans.  It is a haven from the crowds and the chaos of the city, with many benches and lawns to kick back and watch life go by.  The Piazza is surrounded by bars and coffee houses, including a cinema which shows English language films and a theatre. A great place to chill out and plan your day.

ST PETER'S BASILICA AND THE VATICAN

Just 15 minutes' walk from Little Aurelius is St Peter's Basilica, the largest church in the catholic faith built over the remains of St Peter. It is free to enter the church and marvel at the breath-taking design by Bernini, Bramante, Michelangelo and others. The Vatican museums are just a stroll from the Basilica following the huge fortified wall of Vatican City. One of the largest museums in the world, it has a staggering collection of art, statues, jewellery, tapestries and much more. Collections ranging from the ancient world through the papal period and of course the most famous rooms the Raphael rooms and the Sistine chapel. Tickets should be booked in advance and be prepared for long queues in high season and literally swarms of people.

CASTEL ST'ANGELO

This is a wonderful place to explore, and again is right on your doorstep. An ancient monument, once the burial place of the emperor Hadrian (the guy who built the wall in England) is now a military museum amongst other things. Inside are the prisons where Galileo was kept, papal apartments where the popes hid from invaders and a museum of curiosities from Rome's military past. There are gorgeous frescoes, statues, a pope's bedroom, and a wonderful plateau from which to view the whole of Rome. It has a bar and a restaurant and a beautiful panoramic view. A must for Adults and children of all ages. Just exploring the castle, itself is an adventure. In August and September, it is open at night with free jazz performances.
